AlloFlo Uveae Stent
An advanced glaucoma solution using donator biocmpatible tissue to create a novel internal drainage pathway.
What is AlloFlo?
AlloFlo is a specially processed and purified human tissue (allograft) spacer designed to direct fluid from inside your eye to the suprachoroidal space ). Unlike Aqueous hunts or other prosthetic devices, AlloFlo uses biological tissue to create a pathway for drainage to a space within the layers of the eye. The tissue is inserted through a small incision and positioned to maintain a patent drainage pathway without bleb formation.
AlloFlo offers the advantage of internal redirection without external bleb blebs, reducing infection risk. It is particularly valuable for patients who need external drainage but want to avoid any complications of conventional blebs.
When is AlloFlo appropriate? AlloFlo is indicated for moderate to advanced glaucoma where strong pressure reduction is needed and you want to avoid external bleb surgery. It works well in patients with poor conjunctival tissue and is a good alternative to trabeculectomy or Aqueous shunts in select cases.
What to Expect — Before, During, and After
Before the procedure: You will receive general anesthesia or IV sedation. Your eye will be positioned and sterilized. The surgical area will be prepped.
During the procedure: The surgeon creates a small incision and places the AlloFlo conduit internally. The tissue is positioned to create a new internal drainage pathway . No external bleb is created. Total time is about 15 minutes.
After the procedure: You may experience mild soreness and blurred vision as healing progresses. You will use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for a few weeks. You will receive the “Patel Pack”, which contains emergency medications (drops and pills) to manage any sudden pressure spikes that may occur during healing.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1: Minimal discomfort and some blurriness. Use prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops. Keep the Patel Pack with you for emergency pressure spikes. Limit strenuous activities for 1 week.
- Week 1: First postop visit. Vision improving. Monitor for any pressure spikes (you have the Patel Pack). Continue antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops as directed.
- 1 month: Second postop exam. Evaluate pressure response and conduit function. Continue drops as directed. The Patel Pack is available if needed for any sudden pressure rise.
- 3 months: Final postop assessment. Pressure response should be established. A hypertensive phase may occur and can be managed medically. Return to routine glaucoma schedule.
Pressure spike risk: AlloFlo may develop an early hypertensive phase where pressure spikes during the first 3- 6 weeks. You have been provided the Patel Pack containing emergency medications (drops and acetazolamide 250mg pills) to manage sudden pressure rises. Take emergency medications if pressure spikes, and call us immediately for guidance.
Your Follow-up Schedule
AlloFlo requires regular early follow-up to monitor conduit function and manage any pressure spikes. The Patel Pack gives you tools to manage emergencies at home.
Patel Pack contents: Your Patel Pack is an emergency medication kit containing topical drops and acetazolamide 250mg pills. Use these if you experience a sudden pressure spike between scheduled visits. Take 1-2 pills with water if pressure rises acutely.
What we monitor
- Intraocular pressure and conduit function
- Tissue integration and healing
- Any hypertensive phase or pressure spikes
- Inflammation and tissue response
- Absence of bleb-related complications
Our Outcomes — What EPSAZ Patients Experience
Here is what we see with AlloFlo in appropriately selected patients:
Why this matters: AlloFlo combines strong pressure reduction with the safety of internal drainage. No external bleb means lower risk of bleb-related infection. The tissue integrates over time, creating a durable drainage pathway.
